Shipbrokers are the intermediaries and market experts. They possess deep knowledge of freight markets, vessel supply, and cargo demand. Their role is multifaceted: they negotiate contracts, provide market intelligence, and ensure smooth transactions, all while representing either the shipowner (the disponent owner) or the charterer (the cargo interest). Their expertise is vital in a volatile market where freight rates fluctuate based on global economics, geopolitics, and seasonal trade flows.

Chartering is the specific process of hiring a vessel. This is governed by a charter party, a detailed legal contract brokered between the two parties. There are three primary types: a Voyage Charter, where the ship is hired for a specific journey at a negotiated rate per ton of cargo; a Time Charter, where the charterer rents the vessel for a set period, paying a daily rate and covering fuel and port costs; and a Bareboat Charter, a long-term lease where the charterer effectively becomes the technical operator.

Beyond chartering, shipbrokers also specialize in sale & purchase (S&P), advising on the multi-million-dollar buying and selling of vessels, and in newbuilding contracts, acting as project managers between owners and shipyards.
